Pelmeni are dumplings consisting of a filling wrapped in a thin dough. One theory suggests that pelmeni originated in Siberia, as they are a particularly good way of preserving meat during long Siberian winter.

Pelmeni became then very popular all over Russia where the filling can be minced meat (pork, lamb, beef..), fish, or mushrooms. It is also popular to mix together different kinds of meat.

Pelmeni can be stored frozen for a long time and immediately before eating they are boiled in salted water until they float, and then 2 to 5 minutes more.

Follow the instructions below to make the dough, the filling and cook the Russian pelmeni. Keep Reading →

Planetary Missions

You may certainly not be surprised by the many spacecrafts orbiting the Earth or the Moon, but it is amazing to find out how many successful missions resulted in spacecrafts reaching Mars, or about how some are orbiting Venus or Mercury or Jupiter or Saturn, or about all the rovers or probes that actually landed on other planets, like the Moon, Mars, Saturn’s moon Titan and soon even the first comet.

It is extraordinary how the Voyager 1, launched in 1977 and the farthest spacecraft from Earth, actually entered interstellar space, the matter that exists between the star systems in a galaxy!

All of these missions of course follow in the footsteps of dozens of predecessors and of failures in some cases.

I created the infographic above (click the image or here to open the 2560 pixels wide version) to show all the planetary missions that are currently, as of September 2014, in operational status. It displays all the spacecrafts and rovers that we launched to other planets of our solar system and even beyond, in the interstellar space. Note that distances between planets are not to scale. Failed or terminated missions (at least most of them) are not included in the graph.

The following is the list of planetary missions included in the infograph, with also a short description for each: Keep Reading →

Tiramisù in Italian means “pick me up” or “lift me up”, and is an extremely popular and delicious coffee-flavoured Italian dessert. It is made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a mascarpone cream and flavored with cocoa.  The origins of Tiramisù are often disputed between Italian regions such as Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Piedmont and others.

There are countless variations of Tiramisù recipes online, but here I want to share with you a very easy recipe that I mastered over the years and that my friends find delicious!

In this post I’d like to share with you some tips about how to photograph great fireworks displays. I shot the photo above at the Finnish Fireworks Championships that was taken in Helsinki in Summer 2010. You can find more photographs on my DeviantART gallery at this link.

My shooting mode was: tripod, remote shutter, no flash, manual mode (with auto focus), ISO 100, aperture f/11, BULB mode.

Let’s look more in detail to the settings I used for my fireworks displays shot:
